I'm experiencing the same problem as well, on Google Chrome and Internet Explorer. When I try to download files that previously (more than a month ago) would download correctly, I am redirected to a 404 error page. The videos stream perfectly, so they couldn't have been deleted. Permissions have not changed, my security software has not changed, and neither my browser nor its settings have changed. The only thing that's changed is the google drive interface, so I can't help but think it's to blame.
Recently uploaded files seem to work fine, but re-uploading everything is not really an option. Beppema 12/9/2014, 1:26 น. I am having this issue as well. And honestly, I am getting fed up with Google's lack of care. More than one person reporting and issue means IT'S AN ISSUE.
This was reported over ONE month ago (coming up on two). Some of us, like me, pay for this service. Is it crazy that I expect Google to fix at least on of the issues I am having with Google Drive? So far, not a single question or comment of mine has been answered on the forums:( Very disappointing.
I am trying to share a link with a co-worker to a screencast I created. The file is fairly large and when he clicks to the download link it gives him a 404. When I click it it also gives me a 404.
We have tried multiple browsers (even though we primarily use Chrome. So no excuse?).
We have also tried multiple operating systems. There's a BUG. I am one hair away from dropping Google Drive and going with Dropbox. I have no idea what even came over me when I switched to Google Drive. So far it's been one issue after another. LifeWulf 30/9/2014, 13:26 น. Well, I'm apparently doing this wrong.
Here are the steps I take: 1. I go to My Drive, Right-click the video, click Sharing, Copy the link. I go the the site I've created on Google, click Edit Page, click Insert, click Drive, paste the address I copied above into the 'Or paste a web address here' box at the bottom, Click Select, Save, Save. A miniature copy of the video appears on the page. There are no download options anywhere on the page, and right-clicking the video only gives options for the image. The only way I can get a download option is to Pop-out the video, and the download button there gives me the same 404 error.
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong and how I can do it right. Uswine, 11:30 น. It's possible that we've solved this. I replaced all after the last / on the file to the host link that showed in the Details folder and when I tried to save it Google said it was an incorrect link. Since the host name was: Copy of xxx.mp4, I changed the file name to just xxx.mp4, added that to the file name after the last / and posted it on the web page as a link. When I right-clicked and chose Save link as sure enough it showed a download option with the file name in the correct format (mp4). However, when I clicked Save got an error message that said 'cannot download file.'
That was in Chrome, so tried it in IE and it reported that the file was missing. Then went back to My Drive and saw in the Details panel that the file was still loading. I suspect that the name change will cause the whole file to reload, and as it's a 2.1 GB file it will take some time.
When it gets reloaded I'll try it again and let you know. I'm cautiously optimistic that this will work, though. Fingers crossed. Uswine, 13:54 น.
I think my optimism was premature. By bedtime last night the Details section still showed the file as 'Loading' with the circle going around, so I removed it from My Drive and started over. Started uploading the file before retiring for the evening and by the time I got back to my computer the file had uploaded but the Details section still showed the same as above.
Naturally the file won't play or download from any of my other 3 computers, although it will do both on the computer I loaded it from. Decided to call Tech Support to add my report to the numerous others that Google has received about this problem and naturally the Tech wanted me to change things on my browser, etc. Told him I only wanted to add my report to the numerous others they had received and hung up.
During the conversation he did mention that 2 GB was the recommended limit for files, so split the file up and in the process of uploading two 1 GB files and will see how that works, both when shared the normal way and the way Uswine described. I'll post my results here.
Billy Rawl, 6:37 น. Well, I never could get this to work when the URL was configured as Uswine described. Checked and double checked that it was right but still got a 'No file' when I tried to play or download it.
However, after I split the file and loaded two 1 GB files, the first one would play and download properly when it was embedded but the second one showed 'Google was unable to process this video.' I've fought with this problem for long enough. There is obviously something wrong here, and one would hope Google would recognize this and fix it. Meanwhile it's back to Microsoft OneDrive, which now offers 15 GB, for me. When videos are shared on that site they can be viewed without signing in to Microsoft, but the recipient needs an account to download them.
However, they play at the original resolution, while Google Drive reduces them to 360p for playing. However, the downloads from Google Drive (when you can get them to work) download at the original resolution.
Thanks for the help, Uswine. Uswine, 15:38 น. You mean google i assume' Nope, I meant Microsoft. I have the file hosted on OneDrive. With that host you can play the file (at the original resolution) without signing in to an MS account, but you need to be signed in to an MS account to download it.
I've sent you an e-mail with a link to download it if you want to experiment with this 2.1 GB file. Too much hassle with Google Drive for me to try use it right now. If they ever get it to working as well as it did the last time I used it, probably more than a year ago now (Progress?), I may go back to it, since I like for my friends to be able to download stuff without having to sign in. Until then I'll continue to use OneDrive. Uswine, 16:49 น. It's possible that this problem has been fixed.
Over the course of the past two days I've tested it with links and embeds on several videos, and the features have worked as advertised. To be specific, I've uploaded various MP4 videos to Google Drive, set them to 'Public on the web', both embedded and inserted links on web pages and they all played and downloaded properly on a different computer than they were uploaded on. So if you've had this problem you may want to try it again. Mel Torment 27/1/2015, 16:33 น. And me - Google, are you listening at all? We're paying for this service.

It used to work fine and then they changed the format of how videos open.
Pretty crappy to charge customers for a service and then not provide pretty important aspects of that service. Both streaming and downloading don't work on the videos I try to share with people. The only good thing is I'm able to stream the videos to my Chromecast, which is the primary reason I signed up for Google Drive in the first place. It works as a cloud home theater PC if you will, but it is absolute CRAP when it comes to sharing videos. Sarefo 4/4/2015, 0:21 น. It's now July 3, 2015 and the issue has not been resolved! The only way to make it work is to make a copy of the file then share it.
DO NOT make any edits to the name after you share it. If you do 404 all over the place. If you share it then edit it the file will no longer download. You can only view it.
Even if you unshare it and reshare the file 404. So make a copy (which eats up more of your space) then share it and people should be able to download it. Kristina O 18/7/2015, 11:33 น. Same thing with me, whenever I try to download the file I get the 'error 404 HTTP' message. It was shared to me through a public link, and the owner has enabled it for download, so there shouldn't be any problem. I managed to add it to my drive in the browser version, but whenever I right click it I don't get the 'make a copy' option. Another thing I've been noticing is that I can see the google drive app try to synch the file to my mac, but it never finishes.
It just keeps synching all day. I've tried restarting several times, but it's always stuck at the same part.

Furthermore, when I check in my computer files under google drive, I can't see the file I'm looking for. I really hope there will be a solution to this!!
Kurd Iraq 20/7/2015, 8:21 น. Been having a similar issue. I was editing a Google Spreadsheets doc inside the Google Drive, and all of a sudden it just stopped working. So I restarted the browser and when I try opening that file it gives me a 404 error.

This is a very time sensitive document with a lot of important information that won't open. It is really disappointing that there is no answer to this yet! I have tried in multiple browsers, multiple accounts and admin roles, and different computers and locations. Absolutely no luck.
GOOGLE HELP!!! CarrieVO, 16:08 น. Continuing to have this problem consistently with ANY file (all video mp4) that I try to send to a customer (but only if the file is over 10GB). After a year, I thought it would be fixed by now. Making a new copy of the file (within GDrive, so quick) WILL allow them to download it, but only if they start the download within 10 minutes or so after making the copy.
After that, the problem (404 error, file not found) starts affecting the copy file also. So if they don't start to download it within 10 minutes, need to do it over again. The only other solution seems to be to split the file into pieces, all less than 10GB, and then all can be downloaded. Then the customer needs to put them back together. Not good, Google.
